This wine honors long-time Shafer Winemaker Elias Fernandez and his relentless pursuit of quality. Sourced from small ridgetop and foothills vineyards adjacent to the southern border of Stags Leap District, Relentless is a proprietary blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah.

The two grape varieties grow side by side in vineyard blocks that offer a variety of sun exposures throughout the day, including steep eastern blocks for lots of morning sun and westward sloping blocks, offering midday and late day solar exposure. Thanks to its thin, volcanic soil and quick runoff the vineyard consistently delivers effusive flavors.

At harvest the Syrah and Petite Sirah varieties are typically picked, crushed, fermented and barrel aged together, producing a wine of distinctive richness and elegance.

Pull the cork on this vintage and you’ll find an inky, liquid feast – aromas and flavors of meat and game, briar fruit, morels, boysenberry, grilled blueberries and cinnamon. The acidity gives this otherwise deep, dark wine a liveliness that offer engaging pleasure. The ripe, silky tannins offer tremendous promise for things to come after years in the cellar.

Structured and well-framed by taut tannins and lively acidity, this blend will benefit from time in the cellar. Floral blackberry and espresso aromas lead to densely complex flavors of dark plum, licorice and mineral. Syrah and Petite Sirah. Best from 2019 through 2027.

The 2013 Relentless is powerful, tightly wound and in need of time in bottle. Dark cherry, plum, spice, mocha and new oak are all pushed forward. Like so many wines in 2013, the Relentless is going to require a bit of patience. The 2013 is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Score: 92(+) Points.
